For the past two years, I have been working on a singular project that started out as an outlet from my love of the culture in Asia, specifically Japan, but expanded past that. I started to work with an underlying feminist message expressed through imagery of Brothel Maidens from the Edo period in Japan. As I began to work and study, the farther I studied I began to learn that in the 1700s the beginnings of our modern day popular culture or pop culture started to take shape. I have been looking at and painting our modern fictional characters for years, after seeing the connection between what I have been doing in the past and what I was currently working with, I began to shift my subject matter. From Brothel Maidens in the 1700s to vintage Pinups, and comic book characters the timeline proceeds to come full circle using both past and present knowledge to create elaborate works of art. More work to be added soon.
